Dave & Lynda's 2008 Travels travel blog

This time Cleveland Tennessee. But let me fill you in on how we got there!

We really didn’t want to leave our campsite at Amicalola State Park in Georgia. The mountains were beautiful.. The weather was sunny. But we decided that we needed to get moving. We packed up, walked Bridget around the campground one more time, and off we went! Dave had studied out the map, and we had decided to take a few scenic roads to get to Rt 411 that would take us to Tennessee. Driving through small towns, enjoying the interesting homes was fun. After a little bit Dave said....” I think we were suppose to find a different road in that last town.” We stopped and looked at the map. We were still on Rt 52... Called Georgia’s scenic byway! There didn’t seem to be any good place to turn around, and it was scenic.... so we kept going. We were driving through the Blue Ridge Mountains. The road was narrow, twisty and very steep! It was pretty, and as long as Dave drove as slow as I wanted him to.... it wasn’t too scary! Eventually we did come to Rt 411, and turned north again and soon we were in Tennessee.

We were looking for a friendly Walmart! They aren’t too hard to find. We had thought we would be in Cleveland, but we got there at noon. We stopped and fixed lunch. Then we headed on and stopped for the night in Knoxville. It was a day of driving. I enjoyed the day, but I think there were some white knuckle turns for Dave!

We woke up to more lovely sunshine. We had shopped and bought some storage baskets, etc that we had decided would be nice in some of the cupboards. Our plan had been just to stay there and spend a few hours redoing cupboards. But the sunshine was so nice, and the weather report had said that would be the only sun in the next 3 days.... so we decided to stack the baskets and do some touristy things while the sun was shining.

We weren’t far from Pidgeon Fordge and Gatlingburg, so we headed southeast and entered into the Smokey Mountains! They were pretty, but we were not impressed with the towns. They were jammed full of people. Absolutely no place to park, and not one of the hundreds of shops or museums made us want to stop. The streets were so narrow that I was amazed we didn’t hit someone or something! I was glad to get through them and head north again towards Virginia. There we found a place to park early because Dave had some puttering to do with the water system.

We were parked in a Walmart parking lot, next to a Lowes, so Dave worked on the hot water heater again. He found a new check valve.... with brass insides, instead of plastic. After working on it all evening.... then in the morning some more... it is still leaking. So he bypassed the hot water heater so we would have water, just no hot water.. It may eventually take a plumber!
