Canyon De Chelly

Monument Valley

Monument Valley

Day 97 Monday - We're back in cold country again, it was freezing overnight & our outside water filter burst. We left early & headed up to Canyon De Chelley. There appear to be two types of canyons that we have visited so far, those that you drive into, like Zion & those that you view from the rim, like the Grand Canyon. Chelley is mainly a rim view canyon but you can take jeep & horse tours along the canyon floor.

We couldn't find a convenient campground with electricity available so we decided to drive the South rim viewing points & then push on to the full hookup campground in Monument Valley for the night.

It's noticeable now how petrol prices are creeping up & up. It's now hard to find anywhere under $3.35/gall whereas we were paying under $3/gall when we started out last year.

Strange thing today was seeing six dead dogs along the side of the road from Chinle which is at the entrance to the Canyon De Chelley.

Day 98 Tuesday - Travelled up through Monument Valley to Mesa Verde National Park. The changes in the scenery as we travel around is amazing, so many variations. This time we started off travelling through spectacular red rock mesas & then through wide open plains into snow capped mountains.

We stopped for petrol at a rural filling station in Bluff & had to wait for the elderly woman owner to get dressed & open up at 10am. It was expensive too but we did get some Idaho potatos from a fellow RVer who was also waiting.

We got to Mesa Verde early afternoon & went into the park for the afternoon. A lot of the sites were closed due to the snow but we did visit the museum & went down into the valley to visit a Pueblo ruin bult into the side of the cliff. Also did a ride round the Mesa to see a couple more of the ruins.

Stayed at RV park close to entrance of Mesa Verde. Snowbound.
