Our next port, after a day at sea, was Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. We shared a taxi with Jack and Jeri to visit the fishing village of Rincon, about 10 miles north of Mayaguez. Rincon is a very pleasant town, one of the locals brought us to a beautiful mural which displayed the history of the village. Next we had the cab drive us to the Rincon beach – beautiful shaded sand and smooth clear water. Looks like a great area to vacation in. Finally the cab driver dropped us off in Mayaguez so we could explore by foot. The local tourist bureau was providing free walking tours so we went along with a group. The tour guide took us to the city hall building, through a couple of blocks of old town, a quick visit to the oldest liquor store in town and ended the tour on the Plaza Colon where we checked out the cathedral. Mayaguez will host the 2010 Central American and Caribbean games and they are already beginning their preparations. Mayaguez was a nice, friendly town.
