2/5 – 2/7
Two days of fairly rough seas (15 to 18 foot swells and 45 mph winds) brought us to Stanley in the Falkland Islands. This stop was a tender stop (meaning we do not drive up to a port, instead we anchor and take the lifeboats to shore). It was not till the last minute that a decision was made to allow us to go to shore, the seas were still very rough.
We are sure glad that we got ashore, because we went on an excellent tour. First we were bussed about 30 minutes to the end of a road. Then we were switched to 4-wheel drive vehicles for another 30 minutes of rough riding to Bluff Cove Lagoon. Bluff Cove has a huge Gentoo penguin rookery with over a thousand Gentoo penguins and about 20-30 King penguins. The place was amazing. The penguins would walk to within one or two feet of you. It was very exciting to be so close to that many penguins. We must have taken hundreds of pictures. After returning from the tour we walked around town for a couple of hours before returning to the ship.
