Our journey into Guatemala, began on Tuesday night as we tried to obtain online boarding passes - this proved to be much more difficult than anticipated and we were unable to complete the task. It had me worried that we might encounter problems at the airport prior to boarding but all went smoothly. The flights and time between the flights went without a hitch. Thank heavens for Sylvia though, in DFW airport we were told that our flight was 1/2 hour earlier which meant we should have had 2 hours in between flights. We had a quick bite to eat and then took the sky tram tour around the airport (it's absolutely huge!!) only to find it was already 5:10 pm and our flight was boarding at 5:05. When we arrived at the counter they hadn't yet started the boarding process, so we could breathe a sigh of relief.
Antigua is fascinating. It's like the city that never sleeps. Our accomodations are in "The Yellow House" and we are upstairs with a lovely patio right out side our door from which we can watch the hustle and bustle of activity below us. Not having any traffic laws makes for some very interesting situations, mini traffic jams, lots of horns and people scurrying between vehicles to cross the street.
We had the opportunity to see the Central Park, it's beautiful, with a myriad of colorful flowers all around. This is where we met a tour guide named Roberto, who works for the national tourist agency. He took us around the city for a few hours giving us historical backgrounds and colorful insights into everything we were seeing. It is such an amazing place. Plain facades on the exterior open up to beautiful patio areas providing beautiful backdrops for local musicians and artisans. It is so much fun to walk into these entrance ways to see what will open up before us.
The marketplace too is a fascinating place. Street vendors line the way with little alley ways hiding between shops, which, again, open up into more shops and more alley ways, and more shops and more alley ways.
Despite the busyness of the city, I am finding that the change of pace is wonderful and I can choose to be as active or as restful as I choose.
Sleeping in this morning (not sure how I managed with the all the sounds of the street seranading us!) was heavenly and here it is only around 8:00 pm and it's dark outside, I'm tired after our day of touring and almost ready to call it a night!
