We found our way on the 4th, to a really neat campground half way between Monterey and Salinas. We were camped at the top of a hill that overlooked the valley on one side and a racetrack on the other. So in the morning we listened to quail and race cars the rest of the day. As soon as we set up, we drove onto the Monterey Peninsula and drove the 17 mile drive. You have to pay $9.25 to do that, but oh my, the mansions we saw. One that we saw was listed for $9.9 million. Pebble Beach, of course, is off limits to the peons. We drove around twice to get our money's worth and watched the sunset before heading back. On Wednesday, we spent the day at the Monterey Aquarium. Thank goodness for the scooters - we spent 5 hours there. Thursday, we ran some errands and tried to get onto the grounds of Language Institute where Heather will go. But, we didn't have the right credentials.

On the way to San Francisco, we stopped to tour the Winchester House in San Jose. This was built by the heiress to the Winchester Rifle company. After her infant daughter and then her husband died, a "medium" convinced her that if she continued building onto the farm house, evil spirits wouldn't get to her. The workers hammered away 24/7 for 38 years until she died at 92. There are stairs to nowhere and doors to nowhere; closet doors that open to blank walls. This was a working farm, but now sits in the center of town.
