Andre's Costa Rica Adventure 2008 travel blog

We actually didn't spend much time in Puerto Limon - just a stop at the grocery store before boarding a river boat for the trip to Tortuguero. The journey was beautiful. For five hours we saw nothing but rainforest along the banks of the several rivers we traveled along (they are connected by canals). The rivers more-or less parallel the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Occasionally we would see a building or a small village along the river bank, but mustly there was no sign of human habitation - no power lines, very few other boats. I had the feeling of being in a very remote place; it evoked Heart of Darkness, or maybe the movie African Queen...

We saw various animals along the way, including sloths, crocodiles, and various birds including oropendula montezuma, a colorful bird with a long yellow tail. I got a great picture of a caiman basking on the riverbank which I'll plan to post (I don't have the cable for the camera with me at the moment).
