We unhooked and reluctantly pulled away from Shell Mound Park. We'll come back here another year and hopefully the weather will cooperate for kayaking. Our next destination was not far, so we took the back roads and explored the vast Lower Suwannee Wildlife Refuge. We found a "just big enough" spot on a really off road canoe launch site and walked around. Later we drove to the Refuge Headquarters where Tom talked to the ranger who explained the controlled burns we had seen along the road, and that the palms with the rough bark were called "Cabbage Palms." This quiet area abounded with picture opportunities.
