Today was Albert and Karla’s 34th wedding anniversary. We all played it cool at breakfast just wishing them ‘happy anniversary’ without letting on this evenings plan. I went for a swim in the pool which I found very magical. To be in the wilderness like that at 8am was amazing! By 8.30am we were ready to leave the camp and head back to Maun. We packed up the mokoro’s for our final trip on them. For me this part of the trip wasn’t long enough – I could have happily stayed in the Delta for longer as I loved it!
When we got back to dry land we loaded the truck and took photos of our polers before heading to see Noel and Aston who had stayed with our truck. Lunch was provided at the campsite. It was very odd sitting to a table in a civilised manner after 48 hours bush camping! There was time for a quick swim and then it was off to Gweta for a party! Sabrina and Sam did some food and booze shopping in Maun and off we went.
We had planned that Albert and Karla would do nothing but enjoy themselves this evening so on arrival at the campsite they were herded off to the bar much to Karla’s dismay as she just wanted to take a shower! What she didn’t know was that we were putting up their tent for them and decorating it! We put up a congratulations banner and balloons and set out their beds with red petals on it. We had also got a card and chocolates so that was laid out inside for them! As a finishing touch we put some condoms we found in the bathroom on their pillow which Karla thought was sweets at first! Outside the tent we had an aisle of candles and a bottle of champagne for them. Ray led them back to the camp with their hands over their eyes and they heard music playing. I think they knew something was up but had no idea what we were up to! When they opened their eyes they were totally stunned and overcome with emotion as we were all there toast them! It was fabulous. I think it worked better than we could have hoped for.
Sam did an amazing job of organizing a Mexican dinner accompanied by a great punch! Once the punch and bubbly were gone, dinner was over and speeches done we headed over to the bar where the party continued. There was a fantastic atmosphere amongst the group with lots of dancing and joking. Ray was determined we should all go swimming in our clothes and eventually got his way when at about 1am at least a dozen of us dived into the pool in our varying states of undress! It was amazing how warm the water was so it was lovely and a good laugh!
Karla had gone in in just her knickers and when she got out Albert gave her his t-shirt to put on but before she could get it on a car pulled up right in front of her with its headlights on full – boy did we all laugh including Karla who I think actually laughed the most! It was a wonderful day and an anniversary I don’t think they will ever forget!
