Ahhhh, a sleep-in today! After 2 days of getting up around 5am today we slept in until 8.30am. Had a relaxed breakfast and then headed off to see about our tours for today. We had been told a couple of days earlier that the staff at the Palace of Versailles were on strike for 2 days so our guided tour was in jeopardy. So our plans were to arrange a tour of the Louvre which we did for Friday morning finishing at midday (we leave for Charles De Gaulle airport @ 3pm). Fortunately our hotel is on the left bank and within walking distance (20-25 mins) of the Louvre. Anyway, we found out that our tour was still on for the afternoon.
So, off to Versailles in a minibus tour - only 8 of us - for the afternoon. Vincent, our tour driver and guide was very amiable and knowledgeable which made our tour all the more enjoyable.
What a magnificent place is Versailles! A massive estate with gardens, woodlands and of course the huge Palace. At first we thought it not quite on a par with Hampton Court in the UK but as we wandered through the palace, or rather fought our way through the crowds, we felt that they were both on a par with each other. There was a magnificent display of silverware from the Royal houses of Europe - utterly amazing to say the least.
It's a pity this computer won't let me upload photos although they really wouldn't do the place justice. We had to laugh at the number of japanese having their pics taken in front of thrones, statues etc.....
Once we got back from the tour we walked down the street, checekd out a number of restaurants before settling for one for our last evening meal in Paris. Both of us had Beef Bourbignone and I had the most mouth watering profitèroles I have ever tasted whilst Rob had a Pear Tart that looked as good as it tasted.
Packing tonight for our last day tomorrow before flying to Singapore and back to the warmth.
