We reluctantly made our way to the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula for our final week of our trip together. We met a really cool German couple on the bus trip there, Tobi and Julia, who we spent a lot of time with during the week. The Yucatan Peninsula is a real American cruise ship destination meaning there's little culture left however the beaches are spectacular.
We spent a few days in the town of Tulum and visited the local ruins, situated on a cliff over-looking the Caribbean making for some great photos. We also spent a couple of afternoons on the beach and swimming in the (small) surf.
Tobi and Julia joined us on a day trip to the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza which have recently been voted one of the 7 wonders of the world. The main pyramid (Castillo) is very impressive however we both thought it didn't compare to Tikal or Palenque. Its close proximity to Cancun also meant there are thousands of visitors each day.
We had a couple of days in Playa del Carmen which had a pretty cool vibe and had a couple of great nights with Tobi and Julia. We also visited Acumal Beach where we snorkelled with giant turtles, amazing experience and well worth the 50km drive.
On our final day together we went to Cancun and said our farewells. From here Fiona continues on to Cuba and Brazil with Rita, Liesel and Jo then home via Europe. Greg goes to New York to visit Will and Amanda and then on to Los Angeles to visit Valerie and Rob.
Overall our 6 months in Latin America was amazing, we saw so many great places, met so many great people and had the perfect holiday together. It could not have been better.
