Karratha to Kalbarri
We left Karratha after stocking up with supplies and headed for an overnight stay in Carnarvon. The journey was quite pleasant and the humidity and heat we experienced on the drive from Eighty Mile Beach to Karratha was now well and truly behind us. Carnarvon has a very pleasant climate with a year round average temperature of around 24 degrees. We were very impressed with the quality of the homegrown tomatoes, which were extremely cheap - only $1.00 per bag - and tasted just like the English variety. The town is quite pretty and the townsfolk are quite friendly. The campsite, Wintersun Caravan Park, was quite spacious with good amenities and close to town.
We arrived in Kalbarri around 4pm and booked into Tudor Caravan Park. We have stayed here on several occasions in the past and, in our opinion, it's the best park in Kalbarri. We decided to take an ensuite site, as we intend staying for about 3 weeks.
We will probably do the usual trips to the Gorges and surrounding attractions. We also intend to play quite a bit of Golf before heading on to Perth.
There are two tourist attractions on the coast road from Kalbarri to Northampton, which we recommend to other travelers. The first is the Bird Sanctuary, which is absolutely amazing; with every conceivable breed of parrot, from all over the world, living in a huge walk through aviary, with water features. The centre also has a whale-watching tower. The other is the Seahorse Farm; this is a privately run farm, which exports Sea Horses all over the world. A walk through tour explains the process and is very interesting and informative.
The little fishing town of Horocks is worth a visit and a great spot to fish off the jetty. We met a nice couple, Clair & Dave, who were staying in the caravan park there. Both in their middle seventies, they had been traveling for about 5 years and were heading back to Perth where they live. They had been on a back packing trip through Thailand and Vietnam some time ago and told us they were about to do it again over a 3-month period. The stories they told and the places they have stayed in were just amazing. It is people like this that really inspire you to get the most out of life.
