My Big Adventure

Trying to teach english......or maybe just looking completely crazy.... Dec 19, 2007

School is really good and i LOVE all the little kids, though some days they are hard work!! I'm sure some of them just think i'm completely crazy as i jump around and dance and sing (badly).....but they do seem to be learning and some of them who were really shy when i first arrived will now run up and give me a hug in the morning, which is really lovely. One child last week took great delight in showing me his project on Hitler! Who he seemed to really like! Worryingly. Then i was in the middle of teaching my favourite class when i got called out and round the back of the school.....i thought something bad must have happened, was a bit worried, then i get round the corner and all of grade 5 are there waiting for me to plant a tree!! Now luckily i paid enough attention to mum when she was gardening to know what to do! It was really sweet, they all clapped and i almost cried!! This week i have been trying to teach the children about Christmas. Which again basically consists of me jumping around like an idiot and drawing pictures, trying to mime how santa delivers the children presents and singing jingle bells on repeat because its the only song they like (and i know the words to). And my favourite part of the week so far......The part where i had a front row seat for all the boys who were getting the cane......it was horrid....They all line up and step forward when called, then after they have been whacked they say "thank you teacher" and run away grimacing! I had to sit there and try really hard to not cry, be sick or get up and try and rescue them. I found out afterwards the reason for it was because their hair was too long!!!!! On friday i plan to have a party with each class and basically dance around and sing (this time with music) and generally have a nice time all just because its christmas, not sure how its going to go and i have no idea if its allowed (hope i don't get the cane!)..... Will try to add another entry at the weekend (about last weekend in Chiang Mai)and will try to figure out how to add photos..... Miss you all, hope you're all feeling festive and not too cold x x
