So I hear that Carnaval in the Netherlands is amazing. So we're off this weekend to experience the costumes and the madness, much like the excitement of Mardi Gras in New Orleans though much more family oriented...

This is how I was convinced:

"Hi Lenore,

First of all I want to advise you on this next weekend. Carnaval is mostly celibrated in the south of the Netherlands and only next weekend, therfore I would advise you to go to Maastricht or Breda this weekend and go to Amsterdam some other weekend.

This will probably be one of the few chances you'll get to find out what the Dutch Carnaval is all about. But you won't find out if you go to Amsterdam this weekend..."

We arrived after several hours on the trains to a town painted in yellow, red and green, the official colors of Carnaval. Since the official ceremonies didn't begin till Sunday afternoon, everything we saw was pre-celebration.
