ASIS Travel Adventures 2007-08 travel blog

Rain throughout the night kept waking us up as it came down hard and fast. A quick breakfast had us on the road by 9:30am. The weather was still cool and wet as we make our way from Mossel Bay to George. George is a little inland but we need to stop there to take advantage of the American Express office to cash some more travelers’ cheques into Rand. I'm sure the lush mountains would have looked more attractive if it was a sunny day.

From George we went to Wilderness; another small town on the ocean. It lies in the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains. Wilderness is blessed with the natural beauty of rivers, lakes, and miles of beaches, which are home to whales and dolphins.

Buffalo Bay was the next stop along the way. The severe rain storms this area experienced a couple of weeks ago washed out part of the road here. A temporary side road led us to the Buffalo Bay Backpackers where we thought we would stay but they were fully booked so we headed to Knysna.

In Knysna we managed to find the Highfield Backpackers just a short walk from the center of town for R220 or $31.00. All the backpacker’s establishments seem to be self-catering which means we buy our own groceries and cook for ourselves. A bottle of wine to go with dinner made it complete. Good South African wine only costs about $4.00 a bottle! Bonus. That's what we did tonight. Lucky for us they offer a breakfast for cheaper than we can cook for.
