I finally got my visa extended and made it to Villa Tunari where the animal refuge is that i'm volunteering at. I've been here for 6 days now. It's pretty amazing, when I first arrived a little squirrel monkey came and jumped on me which i thought was a good start, it was so cute. For the first 4 days I walked a Puma called Gato who is a very cool cat, he's pretty placid, he play jumped at me only twice and when he first met me he put his jaws around my knee but didn't apply any pressure, so no Puma injuries for me. However, his trails were so hard and dangerous, I thought I was going to break something pretty much constantly because of the trails and my goodness I have never worked so hard physically in all my life. But its not a bad life trekking through the jungle with a puma all day.
Today was my first day with an Andean Speckled bear called Baloo, I'm meant to work with him until I leave. He is the cutest thing but doesn't exert himself very much so a complete change from the Puma. Also when he runs at me I make sure to get out of his way because his claws are massive and unlike Gato he probably will hurt me if i stay in his way.
The animals here are amazing, there are so many and I can't wait until I'm allowed my camera so I can start taking photos of them, for example today when I was walking back from lunch I came across a tortoise in the jungle, he was about the length of a keyboard. And there are monkeys everywhere, some are affectionate, some not so much but they are all reallly cute.
I'm so glad I came here, its probably a once in a lifetime experience, there can't be many places that will let you be this hands on with exotic animals.
