Cruzin' Across America with Keith & Mary Perry travel blog

Mare at Old Salem, NC

Mare, Molly Kate, and Keith at Raven Rock State Park, NC

Our morning started with a visit to an RV dealer which services our Lexington brand of RV. We've had no glitches so far, but just wanted to make sure everything was in tip-top shape as we knew the next week of our itinerary would include a lot of driving at high elevations. (We also thought it would be nice to learn how to operate our hot water tank, a little luxury we had yet to figure out). We were kindly accommodated for a fee, and with all systems go we were on our way back to Winston-Salem.

Our plan was to visit Old Salem, a living history restoration of a Moravian church community founded in 1776. Today, many of the restored homes are private residences, while the shops are open to the public in this quaint historic district. We, of course, made straight to the bakery, where paper thin sugar cookies, sugar cake, and fresh oven- baked bread could not be resisted! As the community endeavors to keep in the tradition of days past, we observed a group of school children rolling hoops with sticks across the village green. How much fun would that be for kids today? Perhaps they should give it a try! With the colors of fall and the scent of hot apple cider being offered to visitors as they browsed the shops, we enjoyed every minute.

Back on the road, our next stop was Durham. With its neighboring cities of Raleigh and Chapel Hill, the "triangle" area is well known for education, medical research, and technology. It is also the current home of Molly Kate Perry, Keith's daughter. Molly is here to complete an internship in Dietary Science and is currently training at University of North Carolina Medical Center in Chapel Hill. We were all looking forward to this "mini-reunion" and time together. We parked our "Cape Coddage" in Molly's very comfortable apartment complex and enjoyed the luxury of, to us, the spacious surroundings even a student apartment can provide. . Molly's roommate, Erica, was a joy to meet and the four of us enjoyed ourselves just hanging out.
