We saw more tranquil places around which Small" cities of 4 and 6 million people were built. Out in more "rural" areas ( away from the 3 major city centres) such that we started to see Villa style homes of the farmers. Gov't exempted farmers from taxes for another 3 years so they are hiring staff to run the farms and they are also owning business' in town. They flaunt by the size of their homes and the cars they drive - new ones).
Did see our share of " rebuilding and westernizing ( not democratizing) where they are tearing down old homes in farming areas and building new apartments - sound familiar. We have to say that the problems facing folks in China are not different from development strategies and challenges back home. Haven't seen old fashion rickshaws - not rural enough - most in the "cities" are motorized!
Wuxi is famous for purple sand and clay tea pots. Used to be a major TIN mining resource but that dried up dynasties ago. We learned the nuances of good clay pots and bad pots.
It was a cold day and although we were told we were outside- many did not dress well and needed to complain. The boat ride and the story about the 3 kingdom feudd over this huge lake was again - interesting to learn about the history and weaponry used. Also premised on the the magic of the lake and prosperity it would bring. However, a short night and resort hotel made everyone feel warm and cozy. That and cheap beer!
