Wednesday Nov 14th
Today was a gym day, and in the morning I headed over for a leg workout. Now normally I do either squats or leg presses, as I found that doing both heavy lifting exercises in the same workout along with the other six exercises I do would just wear me out. Today, however, I felt strong and did them both. We'll see how that feels tomorrow!
I decided to stop on the way to the gym and get my haircut. I had been eyeing this barbershop on Chapel Street that charged just $17 for a haircut. I had stopped by it several times and found too many people waiting, and today there was no one, so I plopped in the chair for a cut. The barber was an older man, I'd say 60's or maybe even 70's, and as I came to learn, he spoke very limited English. He asked me what I wanted, and I said I'd like him to take my hairstyle back about three weeks growth in length. He responded "Short?", and I said a bit shorter than now. Next thing I knew he was buzzing my hair off! While he was using the clippers, I started feeling them bouncing off my head and realized that his hands were shaking the whole time he was cutting my hair. Dear sweet man....with sharp implements near my head! He seemed to compensate for his condition by going over and over the same spot with the clippers, presumably to even out the spots he missed when they bounced off my head. Then he asked me if I wanted my sideburns short, and I said yes....after which he proceeded to cut them off entirely! Correction, as I realized later, only the left one was cut off...the right one was 1 1/2 inches longer :) All of this was ok, I could manage it. Then he pulls out a razor blade and starts foaming up my neck. Uh, Mr. Shakey Hands with a razor near my head...no way! So I stop him and tell him that I don't want to be razored. He looks confused and then says he can clipper me instead. I say yes, please, and he proceeds to start razoring my neck before I can stop him! LOL I'm sure my face was twisted into a wince the whole time, hoping he didn't draw blood. In the end, it caused a bit of razor burn and nothing else. The name of the barbershop is Edward Scissorhands....I'm not kidding! :)
After I left the barbershop, I saw a unique form of advertising ride by
, four cyclists in a small parade pulling imaginary passengers. The signs swiveled to reveal a fitness product on the other side whenever the wind caught it or they turned a corner. Across the street I saw a prime example of urban housing here in Australia, a terrace house
, which is low, flat and boxy and contains two flats side by side. Inside they are long and narrow with bedrooms up front, small living room in the middle and kitchen and tiny bathroom in the back. They many times have very ornate trim around the front
. I've been in three all in Sydney, two were a bit ramshackle, one done up very modern and nice.
St. Kilda Road is a very grand boulevard that runs south of downtown and diagonally through the city and close in suburbs, including the northeastern side of St. Kilda. I can walk to it in about five minutes from my place. It is three or four lanes wide on each side, with trees lining both sides and also two lines of trees lining the tram right of way that runs down the center. I tried to snap a picture of the whole thing, and it would have been the last photo I would have taken because I would have to stand in the traffic lane to do it. Instead, I took a picture while waiting at the tram station in the center, so you can't really see how wide and grand it is
. The closer you get to downtown, the more it is lined with fancy apartment buildings, office towers, cafes, restaurants and boutiques. It reminds me a bit of the Gold Coast in Chicago.
That's it for today. Hasta manana.....
