Graceland is like stepping back 30 years in time...which is how long it has been since Elvis died. I have to give Priscilla a lot of credit for her handling of Elvis' estate after he died. Who would have thought that his Graceland home would one day be on the Historical Register? Nowadays the tour is given in the audio form with a headset and audio machine. You have the option to listen to little stories as you go along the trophy rooms and the entire home.
The upstairs is off limits as the family still uses it when they are in town. The decor is definitely the funky 70's style. The living room and dining rooms are very tastefully decorated. The kitchen is a typical kitchen of the 70's. The downstairs is Elvis' doings. Yes, there really is carpet on the walls and ceiling of the pool table room. It's very hard to describe, so if you are really curious, make sure you take a trip to Graceland. The TV room was done in bright yellows and he often had three televisions going at the same time. The jungle room has a big chair that Lisa Marie was supposed to be very fond of. The trophy room was a testament to his musical genius. He won just three Grammy Awards in his career and interesting, all three were for gospel music.
The meditation garden is where he is buried, along with his mother, father and grandmother. He built this garden while he was alive and was supposed to have used it for quiet contemplation and meditation.
The estate has a number of museums across the street from the house. His automobile museum was full of cars, motorcycles, go-carts and so on and so forth. He definitely loved his wheels.
Another portion had his two airplanes. The larger of them is the Lisa Marie which he really had decked out. Another exhibit was of his jumpsuit collection. There were a few dozen jumpsuits displayed. It was difficult to get a lot of great pictures because you couldn't use flash photography in any of the areas.
I spent four leisurely hours wandering around the mansion, grounds and all the assorted exhibits and of course gift shops! A fun morning, for sure! It was very interesting looking around at the people going through Graceland..........they were all ages, many from out of the country, men and women alike. All seemed in awe of this poor country boy's rise to stardom............and sadly his inability to survive it to live to a ripe old age. So very sad indeed..................
