Canoeing down the River Sella

Covandonga Cathedral

Uninvited lunch guests!

Friday and it must be Cangas de Onis!! In the morning we went canoeing down the River Sella. The river was very slow moving, apart from slight stretches of 'white water'. Basically where the river had slight level changes. We saw herons, cormorants, ducks, geese, eagles and some kind of hawk and loads of ducks. It was a very peaceful trip and a picnic lunch was provided. As you can see from one of the pictures we also had some uninvited guests!

There were probably about 20 canoes that we saw on our trip. In the high tourist season there are about 4,000 canoes per day going down the river!!

In the afternoon we took a small bus up to the top of the 'Picos de Europa' mountains. Fantastic views, lakes and loads of cattle grazing high up in the mountains. The whole park is a preservation area and there are many older dwellings and a few small communities within the park. The road up is something else! Just wide enough for 1½ cars. Made for some interesting passing situations, especially with drop straight down on one side!

On the way down we stopped at Covadonga cathedral. This area is famous because in the 7th century some soldiers saw a vision of the Virgin Mary prior to battle with the Muslims. This is where the Muslims received their first defeat in Spain.
