I have returned to Nairobi after a long and bumpy bus ride from Mombasa. We are all happy to be back in our homes and are settling into a routine again. We will remain in Nairobi for two weeks before heading off again.
As most of you know, I am a very open person with few secrets. I recently received some bad news from home and it has felt very foreign, even wrong, not to disclose such an important change in my life. I do not have the time, nor the energy, to inform all of my friends and relatives in the states individually so this blog seemed an appropriate forum, particularly because everyone with this url cares about me and my wellbeing.
A week and a half ago, my mother was diagnosed with cancer in her lungs and brain. She is the strongest women I know and remains in high spirits. Her doctors are confident they can successfully treat her and my family and I are gearing up for the journey that lies ahead.
I have chosen to remain in Kenya through the month of October (in order to receive some credit for the semester.) I will return to Portland at the beginning of November. For the time being, I plan to return to Washington D.C in January for my spring semester. I will continue to update my blog and hope to make the most of my remaining time in Africa. As you can imagine, I have good and bad days, so I will try not to make entries on the bad ones. No one likes a downer.
Thanks again to everyone who has sent messages of support and encouragement. My family and I appreciate it more than I can describe. It is always uplifting to hear from friends and family back home, it makes me feel a little closer. No one should waste any time worrying about me as I am surrounded by 25 amazing classmates and the warmth of the Kenyan people. Thanks again to everyone and I hope you will hold us in your prayers. More on that bus ride later...
I hope everyone is well.
