Old Chain OF Rocks Bridge

Water Towers on Mississippi

Bill Wichern, Conservation Police Officer

Me at Chain Of Rocks Bridge

As I planned, I parked at the entry to the Chain Of Rocks Canal Bridge. I had to cross this bridge (not a short bridge) before the Old Chain Of Rocks Bridge. The canal was built for shipping traffic to by-pass the Chain Of Rocks Bridge. It's a one-lane bridge to allow bicycle traffic. When I got to the other side, there was a Conservation Police Officer waiting in his truck for the green light to cross the bridge. I asked if I should continue on straight. I should, but Bill drove me to the Chain Of Rock Bridge and then took me back to my RV. Nice young man...when he saw me on the bridge, he thought I was his Sergeant's wife. Well, I could drive and park my RV at the entry to the C-O-R Bridge. Have these girls that manage the RV park ever been to it?...two miles from the park. So I drove to the Bridge and walked the bridge from Illinois to Missouri...2 miles round trip. It's only 24' wide. There are two water towers at the bridge...in the Mississippi River that is (m i crooked letter crooked letter i, crooked letter crooked letter i, hump back hump back i)...that were built in 1894 & 1915 and once provided drinking water for St. Louis.

By the time I got back to the RV it was lunch time so I cranked up the generator (cool air) and made a sandwich. Just as I was getting my GPS back on line in preparation to leave, a man pulled his car up beside me and got out with his dog. Gary was warning me about people breaking in vehicles. We chatted for about a 45 minutes...he took a picture of me and I of him then I was on my way.

Route 66 in Missouri so far has been uninteresting...at least I'm not on the interstate. Illinois had direction signs on the Route 66 route...Missouri let's you know occasionally if you are on it. Also, there are few relics to be seen. Maybe it will improve.

I'm currently staying ovenight at Walmart in St. Robert, MO.
