After 6 nighsts in Hong Kong we went Macau. Macau is a one-hour ride from Hong Kong on a nice smooth riding fast ferry equipped with big comfy seats. Lonely planet told us it was worth it to pay extra to ride first class to get an upper level seat for a great view. We found out that the seats below were exactly the same without much difference in view point, but we did get free ichiban...ha ha!!
In Macau, we spent the first two night at the Pousada de Mong Ha. It is an educational hotel run by the students of the attached hospitality college. It was lovely! The room was really nice, the bed was big and comfy, free internet and a continental breakfast that was much more than the usual. They even had an omelette cook and an espresso machine:):):)
The first thing we went out to see was Senado Square, the Church of St.Dominic and the ruins of St.Paul. Macau has Portugeuse heritage dating way back to the 1500's so much of the architecture is influenced. The city has done a great job of fixing up some of the sites so that you can appreciate it.
The history behind the ruins of St.Paul is that the church burned down from a kitchen fire and all that was left was the stone work. This included the front facade of the church and the tomb that included skeletons of it's patrons.
Monte Fort was just beside the ruins of St.Paul. It is atop a big hill which you could see far out into the ocean in all directions, to see the enemies coming of course. You cannot see in all directions anymore because of all the beautiful trees that have grown up over many years(it was built in the 1600's). They have built a museum on top of the fort that we did a tour of. It was pretty cool, we took some pictures but we don't want to bore everyone to tears with those so we just included a couple.
