I made it in to La Esperanza, a couple of days ago, and got settled into the home of Mercedes Reyes. She is a very nice woman and is very friendly. She has two daughters who are older than me, and her brother and nephew live there as well. Im sharing a room with Ynnon Tal who is from Israel but went to high school near Philly. He just graduated from high school, and is a very nice and funny guy. We get along well, which is a good thing becuase we are both her for the same amount of time, and it woud suck to have to live with someone who you didnt like for that long. Mercedes has two dogs, Sunni and Rex. Rex is a very sweet pet, but they have trained sunni to bark and to not like strangers for security. Its funny yet annoying becuase whenever I make eyecontact with her or come close to her she just starts to bark non-stop until I got back into my room. She as a large side yardm which is nice and isnt very common for the area to have a yard this size. There are a couple of roosters and a couple of hens running around. The are also maybe 5 or 6 chicks too, and a couple of ducks. Its funny this morning I left the bedroom door open while I was getting ready and waiting to be picked up and the ducks were trying to get into the room but would come in because I was in there. They kinda just pokle their heads around the corner a few times and when I got up and went over to them they scampered away. Last night four of the other volunteers came overy and we played some rummy in our room. From what they were saying Ynnon and I lucked out and got a very nice homestay. We each have a double or queen, I cant tell which, to ourselves. The house is set up where You walk into the front door and are in the living room, which leads out into an open patio are that is coverd by a roof. The patio looks out into the yard and on the other side is a few rooms, one of which is ours. Our room has a lock on it and we have a key to it and the front gate. Ynnon has been teaching me some guitar, and we have been working on writing a song; I cant keep up with the cord changes so I have been playing some simple melody. He has taught me some cords, but I just have trouble changing from cord to cord.
Today was the fist day of volunteer work, and it was awesome. I couldnt have even imagined it to be as great as it is. We get picked up on the corner by the soccer field at 7 in the morning, and take a ten minute ride in the back of a truck up the small mountain over looking LA Esperanza in to the hilly sattelite community. Its up in a very peacful farm settying that is very hilly and with lots of small streams, maize fields, and cows. Our Job site sits below a cornfield next to a small carniation farm, and overlooking a small lake. Its the most gorgeous worksite ever, I never believed I would be working out in the beautiful country like this. I expected a more urban setting, kind of like where I am living....which isnt urban but its not in the beautiful countryside. Today we were mixing clay like earth with water and mixing it with our feet to create mortar to seal the adobe bricks together. The other volunteers have already built most of the main building, except for the roof, so right now we are building a small bathroom that will be our back behind the main building. The main is going to be where the sell the carnations from the farm, and it will have a small resturante/cafe within it. I just cant express how awesome the setting is. I will take my camera up there later this week and take some pictures of it so that I can post them on here. I didnt bring my camera with me to the internet cafe today so I cant post the pictures I have already taken. But right now Ynnon, Mike, Andy and I are going to go buy a few machetes for work and protection. Oh yea, The people im working with are Andy( a guy from enlgand), Mike (Missouri), and a couple from Ireland who are really nice, and I can tell im going to enjoy spending time with all of them. I hope you enjoy what you are reading.....if anyone is actually reading it. Ciao
