We had an interesting and fantastic trip so far. All flights were relatively on time. We flew Aer Lingus in Bus class which was a relief as the coach seats looked pretty small. Besides all the drinks were free and the food was surprisingly good. Darcy, the Vegetarian, was pleased as she was catered to with great care due to her stringent eating habits.
We flew through Dublin and that is an interesting airport. It is small but all the extras (stores, etc.) were all packed in there. We had a four hour layover but there was real Guinness beer, so the time flew by.
Then it was off to Munich. The Munich airport is very efficient compared to Dublin. We flew through customs and GOT OUR BAGS! They didn't end up in Timbuctu. What a relief! We took the S8 train and met a very nice Kraut named Michael, who is in television. We arrived in Marienplatz station and walked 5 minutes to our hotel, Hotel am Viktualienmarkt. It's a very typical German hotel, with narrow stairs, skinny hallways and intimate rooms. We also had 2 beds (2 twin beds). Oh well.
So yesterday, we put a splitter on Darcy's iPod and took an audio tour of Munich that Darcy bought back in the states. That was actually a very cool way to see the sites. It started in Marienplatz and zigzagged around all the sites. One site in particular, which is not on any tours that I saw was the Asamkirche. This is a private church that was built by a couple of Rococonuts. It is literally the most amazing compact cathedral that we have ever seen. It is tucked between average 5 story buildings on a typical Munich street. This is a must see for anyone who wants to be blown away! By this time on the tour the rain was about to start, so we had lunch in Viktualienmarkt and adjusted the tour to include the Residenz, which we closed, literally, before heading to HofbrÀuhaus. We were happy to see several vegetarian items on the menu there as well. There we had a conversation with a couple, an "East" German nurse and German construction worker, who have no English between them except "Hollywood!" By this time we were beat so back into the rain we went to our hotel and bed.
So to get up to date, we are now in Garmisch, in the rain again, and on our way to Reutte, Austria and Hotel Maximillian. We can't wait as we are seeing quite a bit of new snow in the Alps! We hope to update this journal in a couple of days and also hope that this update finds you all well.
Prost,
Paul & Darcy
