Voyage of the Wayward Wind - 2007 travel blog

7/6/07 to 7/13/07 (Monday - Monday)

The drive across New Brunswick was beautiful! Miles and miles of rolling green hillsides and lots of trees, mixed evergreen and deciduous - undoubtedly a sight to behold in the fall. Crossing the new (1997) Confederation Bridge onto Prince Edward Island was quite an experience - it is very high and the view is fantastic.

This Titanium rally was being held at Vacation Land RV Park in Brackley Beach. Although the rally was not to begin until the 7th, at least half those attending were there by the sixth. A large group of us went to a wonderful seafood buffet dinner on the north shore that first night. There was lots of catching up to do with friends we hadn't seen since the Georgia Rally in May, 2006.

Tuesday evening we all (60 of us + 3 kids) had happy hour around a campfire down by the bay. It was a fun evening. Wednesday began with a group meeting, introductions of new members, and sign up for the various activities planned for the week. This was followed by a trip to P.E.I. National Park for demonstrations on how to prepare mussels on the grill, then on to visit the Green Gables and L.M. Montgomery's National Historic Sites. Drew & I decided to opt out of this activity and concentrate on domestic chores instead. By evening it had started to rain so our potluck dinner was moved inside to the Rec Hall. One of our new member couples provided music (violin & keyboard) before, during, and after dinner. Very nice! After dinner, Tony & Sharon, our hosts, had a drawing for some nice gifts - one per rig. Drew received a StormWatch Jacket which he will put to good use. By the time the festivities were over, it was raining hard so we all adjourned to our respective RVs.

After raining all night, the wind took the forefront for several hours Thursday with a pretty steady 50-55 mph and gusts much higher. The bay was a blanket of whitecaps. The scheduled morning golf was canceled, but by late afternoon the storm had passed. We joined others in our group for a tour of the Island Winds wind chime studio where we watched the owner create wind chimes perfectly tuned to a musical scale, e.g., C Major or A Minor, or to the first six notes of a song.

Then we drove to the 2nd city on P.E.I. , Summerside, where we did a bit of shopping before having dinner and attending a concert at the College of Piping & Celtic Performing Arts. The main attraction, Patricia Murray, had a beautiful voice. She sang a number of Celtic & Gaelic songs. When we got back to the RV, we were awed by the thousands of bright stars filling the sky and by the brilliance of the Milky Way.

Friday morning we awoke to a gorgeous day. Unfortunately, the seas were still quite rough and the deep-sea fishing trip had to be canceled. Instead, we joined Glenn & Lura for a sightseeing drive through the central section of the island. It is primarily farm land (mostly potatoes), rolling green hills, and small communities, in fact, it is very much like Ireland. Friday evening 43 of us descended upon the Old Dublin Pub in historic Charlottetown for dinner and music by the Barnacles, a very talented and energetic band.

Saturday was a free day. We just relaxed and visited. The evening culminated with three big campfires. Sunday morning breakfast was provided by the Can-Am Pancake Company which is always fun, followed by a new event - a regional gift exchange. Drew & I spent the afternoon driving around the Eastern Coastal Drive, an area we had not yet been to. Sunday evening the violinist played sing-a-long songs by the campfire.

Drew & I toured a couple of cottage industries - soap-making and Gouda cheese on Monday then joined the whole group for a visit to the P.E.I. Preserves Company where there were many jars of exotic preserves & sauces available for tasting. YUM!! Then we all went across the street for our farewell dinner. Tomorrow we say goodbye to P.E.I. .
