John & Herb Flatt with Pat

We left Glen Ellyn late Thursday morning heading westward toward Detroit Lakes, Minnesota where we will visit with Pat's cousin John Flatt and his wife Cheryl. We only met these great folks two years ago on our way to Alaska when we were invited to a small family reunion John arranged. John had accidentally locate Pat through a chance meeting of his brother and a cousin from Pat's mother's side of the family in the Pheonix, AZ area where cousin Cindy was drawing blood from John's uncle and commented on his last name of Flatt. One thing led to antoher and she ended up giving our phone number to him on the chance that Pat was related. John called and it turned out that Pat was indeed related. Pat's father had been from the the ND/MN area.

The trip was nicer than days earlier as the rain had stopped. We crossed into Wisconsin and lunched at a rest area north of Madison. We continued on as far as Eau Clair where we decided to stop at a Wal-Mart/Sams Club and spent Thursday night in their parking lot. For a Wal-Mart stop it was quiet and as a side benefit Pat found some quilted fabric in the Wal-Mart that she had been looking for to use to make some more of the nice quilted pursed and back packs she and her sister have enjoyed making.

Friday morning we continued on toward Detroit Lakes under a bright Wisconsin and Minnesota sun. In need of diesel fuel we stopped at a station where we found it at ONLY $2.999 a gallon and lunched on hot dogs. We arrived in Detroit Lakes about 4 PM and set up camp for the next three nights in the American Legion Family Campground, the same place that we had stayed two years ago for the family reunion.

We had dinner with John and Cheryl Flatt and John's dad Herb at the Legion where we took advantage of their steak fry special and Herb, who is a resident in a nearby nursing home was able to return to a place where he has enjoyed spending many evenings with his family over the years.

On Sunday we met at our RV with John and his Dad. We spent a lot of time looking at photos and getting John's dad, Herb, to chat with us on recollections of earlier relatives and events. It was a wonderful day and we throughly enjoyed our time in Detroit Lakes.
