Ed & Marilyn 'The Happy Wanderers' travel blog

The weather yesterday was very hot, humid and promising thunderstorms all day. So I was giving tours of Cameron Cave, which requires a quarter mile walk each way just to go to and from the entrance. I tried to find umbrellas, or even plastic ponchos for the tourists signed up for the tour, but there were none to be found. I suggested to the owner that they carry some of those cheap plastic ponchos in the camp store. We finally thought of trash bags, which are always good in an emergency.

I had my own rain jacket with a hood, etc, so here we were, walking through the woods in pouring rain, a guide with a hooded raincoat on, followed by nine tourists wearing dark brown trash bags, arms hanging out the bottom of the bags, carrying lanterns.

Of course, everyone was wet by the time we got to the cave entrance, and the cave is only 56 degrees all year long. Now, people are cold, but no one complained and everyone had a good time. Quite an adventure for most of them.

When we came out of the cave, the rain had stopped and the sun was shining. The temperature was in the nineties with humidity near 100%. It was Steamy!

I had 20 minutes for a quick bite of lunch and then went back with more folks. It was back to back to back for the last three groups and I didn't even have time for a break.

I am ready to never work-camp again. I have so many things we need to get done before we head west, and so little time to do it. We will stop working after Labor Day, and every day will be filled with the fun things we want to do, or the little things we have to do around the RV.

Anyway, back to the present. We are attending a cave party tonight. The owners turn off all the lights in the Mark Twain Cave and allow all of the staff to run around and explore the cave in the dark, for two hours. It should be a lot of fun. We will have flashlights with us. I want to show Marilyn the Jessie James signature and the Dr Joseph Nash McDowell room. I also want to explore some of the passages which are not on the tour route. We will have a good time.

Marilyn is putting our coffee on at I write this, and I still need to get the Alaska journal entry done, so I had better get off of here for now.

I'll be back in the Cameron Cave today, and I just can't wait to see what this day has in store....
