Voyage of the Wayward Wind - 2007 travel blog

7/26/07 to 8/5/07

We spent one night at a COE park in Vermont in the Green Mountains. Very nice but not up to the beauty of Ives Run. The next day we planned to make the 2-hr drive to Littleton, NH but were plagued with engine problems that were not resolved for several hours making our trip 6 ½ hours instead. Fortunately, the major cost was time not money, and we are doing fine once again.

We stayed at the Crazy Horse Campground outside of Littleton for 4 days so that we could spend a day doing laundry & going grocery shopping (it rained all day anyway) as well as some sightseeing. The campground is located in a deep hollow thus no internet or cell phone.

We took a mini-van tour (our truck was too big & not allowed on the road) to the top of Mt. Washington where the view was awesome and the weather was rare for the summit (no jacket required & no wind). The White Mountain area is beautiful but seems to be a rather poor area except for the ski resorts. There were lots of abandoned homes and businesses. We also backtracked into northern Vermont where we toured the Vermont Maple Farms candy plant (Yum!), the Cabot Dairy (wonderful cheese!!) and the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream facility - talk about Happy Tummies that day!!!!!!!!!!!!

From there we drove south to Uncasville, CT (near New London) to visit mutual friends then up the coast where we spent a couple of days seeing Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The wind atop Cadillac Mountain in Acadia made up for what we missed at Mt. Washington.

Instead of taking I-95 further north, we thought US 1 would allow us to see more of the Maine coast. Bad move - the road was in deplorable condition, we saw very little of the coast, and it made for a long and tedious day! Oh, well - You can't win them all!

Tonight we'll stay in Houlton, ME just 3 miles before crossing into New Brunswick. Tomorrow we go to P.E.I.
