ok so after galapagos we bused back across to riobamba. We were told that there was an "exciting" train ride down what is called the Nariz del Diablo (The Devil's Nose) where there is a variety of switchbacks down a steep descent and you get to ride on the roof...
Well we got to the town and were not impressed. We did the train ride only to find out you cant ride on the roof because some Japanese tourist got decapitated a few weeks ago. It is not know if he was singing karaoke or not..
The train ride was quite bring and yes the countryside was quite nice, it was nothing overly special. Maybe it was because we had just come from galapagos so our standards were pretty high... Anyway we went back to town and really didnt like it at all... we decided then and there to leave on the next night bus to Peru... Alas, no... we couldnt... so we booked a ticket on the next night bus and wondered what the hell we were going to do in this dump of a town!!! Well we found something and were very very glad we stayed... Mountain biking down Chimborazo, Ecuadors highest mountain at 6310m. We took a full day tour that drives us up to the base camp at 4800m and we walk up to the net refuge at 5000m. Very steep, very difficult, very much ouit of breath for lack of oxygen... Then we bike down from there for 50kms until about 2900m. There were some great views and the biking was very good... I only had one major crash and flipped the bike and stopped myself with my head. I was going quite quicker than everyone else though :)
After that we boarded our night bus for the peru border... hideous!
