Day 1 and 2 - July 11 (Wednesday) and 12 (Thursday), 2007

Greg:

Not much happened on these two days, as we traveled from San Jose, California to Munich Germany via Atlanta and Stuttgart. It seemed like one continuous day as time zone merged into time zone and only about 3 or 4 hours total sleep between the two days. Strangely enough we feel amazingly good even with the lack of sleep.

We left at 6:50 am San Jose time on Wednesday and arrived in Stuttgart at 9:00 am local time on Thursday. The flights were pretty uneventful. The time it took to rent a car in Stuttgart from Avis, however, seemed half again as long as the flights coming over. It's never a good idea to be in a hurry when you're renting a car in Europe. When we got the car, I had forgotten that most cars over here have a stick shift, so I had to make a few jumping starts before I got back into the swing of a stick shift again and on our way to Munich.

Unfortunately, there must have been a large accident on the autobahn because we were in bumper-to-bumper traffic just north of Ulm for about an hour. By this time the lack of sleep was kicking in. We finally made it into Munich about 2pm with the help of Google maps which gave us perfect directions to the apartment we are renting for a week. We were met there by the apartment's owner, Birgit, who has spent some time living in the US in Washington DC, Oregon, and Southern California. That really is fortunate for us because the apartment is furnished with many of the creature comforts we yanks find it hard to live without. It is also a very good size by European standards with a separate bedroom, kitchen, and living area.

After getting the keys and instructions on the apartment, we laid down for a couple hours to at least catch up on some of the sleep we've lost in the last 28 hours. After the nap and unpacking, we found a local café where we each had wiener schnitzel and beer for dinner.

We're now close to turning in for the evening and getting a good nights sleep before our first full day in Munich tomorrow.
