We were glad that we had moored at Cambrian Cruisers on a clear Friday night, because it was raining again on Saturday morning when we packed up to return the boat at 9 am.

Our drive on the M4 to Bath in heavy traffic was very wet. I was glad to leave the motorway behind and head south to Longleat, the big estate of the Marquis of Bath. We visited Longleat 30 years ago on our first trip to Britain, so it was interesting to see the changes there.

In 1949, the lords of the manor couldn't afford to keep up the house and gardens, so they started a drive-through zoo on the huge grounds. stocked with African animals living in open tracts of grass and trees, with fences to separate predators from prey and gates to let cars enter. Now there are about a dozen different tourist attractions at Longleat, including a steam train that runs around the grounds. The present Marquis of Bath still lives at the manor house, and seems to be doing quite well!
