Sometimes there is nothing like an ice cold coke.

This morning we ate a hearty breakfast at the guesthouse and then walked a couple kilometers to the large market in town. We bought a few essentials and then walked down to the town center located on the Mekong River. It was a sleepy town without much to see or do but we did manage to track down a 1.25 litre of coke and a bag full of ice, which satisfied us completely.

We discussed but quickly discarded the idea of renting a motorbike to see a few sights outside of town. We still had quite a bit to see in the south and the clock was ticking on the visas so we decided to catch the noon bus headed south. Our next destination was Pakse, which we intended to check out as a possible stopping point to celebrate my birthday. We caught the local bus to Savannakhet where we changed buses and made it to Pakse by 7pm. It took us a long time to find lodging because we were feeling discriminate- we were in the mood for something nice (for a change). Finally, we found exactly what we were looking for- a nice hotel with a very clean room, hot shower, cold air con and HBO/Cinemax. By the time we had super hot showers and rejoiced in the novelty of air conditioning (we have not had it since Bangkok) we were positively giddy with excitement. We ate a good Indian meal across the street and then practically ran back to the room to soak up the air con and television.
