It was a pretty cloudy day with rain now and then on the drive from Atlin to Skagway. Some incredible scenery along the way even though it wasn't the best photo op day.
We now have hit the tourists big time! There was one bus after another coming at us loaded with cruise ship passengers on their way to Whitehorse, we guess, to take in the scenery over the White pass. Also, a marked increase in RV's along the road.
We have booked a return to this section by train on Friday so we hope that the weather will cooperate on that day and we get a lot of photo ops.
We spent our first day here checking out the other campground possibilities; picked one and moved the rigs. We dealt with 4 ships worth of tourists to wander town a little ourselves, do some grocery shopping, get propane and an Internet account with a local wifi provider. No way I'm going to get over these mountains!
We did the tourist train to the summit of White Pass on Friday. We hit an absolutely incredible day. It was clear, sunny and warm, which we are told is rare for here. The norm seems to be cool, overcast with fog blanketing the summit and lots of rain. It was a good trip with lots of beautiful scenery, snow, rivers, waterfalls, bear, etc. They did the Summit Shuffle when we got to the top.
We switched sides of the train car when we got to the top so those who sat on the side with the view going up, sat on the other side going down. That way everyone on the train got to see the incredible views.
The O'Bryants took the ferry to Haines on Saturday we have hung around here 2 more days. They have friends there to visit. We did some geocaching (found one and could not find another) and hit the museum and toured the Gold Rush Cemetery. We take the ferry to Haines today. Today is cold and rainy. Good day to travel.
