The beautiful Lake Baikal

more Lake Baikal

Our first group photo!

Our first two nights are spent at the lakeside town of Listvyanka at Lake Baikal, famous for being the deepest lake in the world. Our first day we look around a reconstructed old-style wooden village, and then the afternoon is ours, so I opt to have a walk around the town. The group spent our first evening having a meal at our hotel, and the meal's main attraction being omul fish, which is very similar to trout. We find ourselves with a surplus of vodka, so Jenny, Me, Kuba and Lori talk and laugh our way into the small hours.

Day 2 is similar to Day 1, and we all head to the top of a local hill overlooking the lake followed by a visit to the Lake Baikal museum. We round off the day with another late night drinking vodka, including a Fisherman's friend flavoured vodka provided by one of Kuba's tour guide friends, an Aussie guy called Tim.

Our final day is spent wandering around Irkutsk, the largest city in Siberia, and the main jumping off point for Lake Baikal. To be honest, Irkutsk doesn't really have much to offer, and the group visited a museum on the local history of Irkutsk and the surrounding area and then wandered around the town for the afternoon. We round of the evening by boarding the train for the overnight journey to Mongolia.

Some final thoughts on Russia:

1. St Petersberg is worth a week of anyones time.

2. The Russian police are corrupt, so minimise any dealings you may have with them.

3. Unfortunately there is some truth in the fact that Russians are a little dour.
