La Paz marathon is a lonely affair

We really enjoyed La Paz. There are no big tourist attractions in the city or very pretty sites, but there is a lot of energy and we found two of our favorite things -- lots of good, cheap food and a very cheap hotel with a great location and cable tv. It's probably not a great place to go if your on a short vacation, but it is a nice place to spend a while as a break from travelling. The streets are kind of chaotic with car and pedestrian traffic, plus they are lined with stall after stall of people selling random stuff - from candy and sodas to batteries and q-tips, you can pretty much find anything you want on the street. It was also nice that we were able to meet up with one of the girls who had done the Peru 9 day hike with us. She had spent some time volunteering in the city so could clue us into the best restaurants, including Alexander's Cafe which is basically a Starbucks knockoff with nice drinks and desserts, including warm cinnamon rolls the size of my head. I didn't expect Bolivia to have anything like that so it was a nice surprise. We also sampled more local cuisine, like salteƱas - basically meat or chicken empanadas with potatoes and who knows what else, but they taste great.

For all of you runners we saw part of the La Paz Marathon. It's everything you would hate in a race - hot, sunny, hilly, and is run at around 12,000 feet. Not to mention crowd support is minimal so we spent 2 hours applauding every single runner that went by. I think we became fabled -- "remember the people who applauded?" (Charlie)
