Perito Moreno, one of the only advancing glaciers

The Chilean fire Argentina !

We had a nice flight to El Calafate with some impressive scenery on the way. Landed and got a taxi to our hostel which we had pre booked. It was not too impressive and fairly expensive. We dumped our bags and went out looking for another place. Found another hostel which was nicer and cheaper and they did day trips to the Perito Moreno glacier. We booked a trip and a night´s accomodation and then we headed back to our own hostel.

Next day we packed our stuff and were picked up by the bus to take us to the Moreno glacier. This glacier is one of the only remaining advancing glaciers in the world. The bus took us into the national park and we went for a walk infront of the glacier. There were then a series of walkways from which it was possible to get really close to the glacier. It was pretty amazing. Parts of the glacier were continually breaking off and they made an incredibly loud noise. We were lucky enough to see some huge parts fall off roll around and settle as a new iceberg to float away down the lake.

El Calafate is a nice touristy town, tree lined streets, bars, restaurants and lots of shoips. We ate in a Parilla. Nick had the tenedor libre (translated as ´free fork´ - eat as much meat as you can !). First serving was a full plate of lamb (best Nick has ever had). Then chicken breast, followed by sausages, beef steak, and then lots more of the same. Unfortunately for non meat lovers the choice was not as good. Monica´s pasta dish was not half as good. Rolled home to bed after this good feed !
