The ride to Hania was uneventful and when I got there I used my guidebook and compass to find the Hotel Kriti about a 10 min. walk (once I found my bearings) from the bus station. That night the hotel recommended a restaurant not far away for dinner. It was a typical Greek restaurant where the locals go and I ordered calamari over rice with salad. Pretty good. The next day I found the old town and small Venetian port that is surrounded by cafes, restaurants and shops. Very picturesque. I ate at a nice place and talked to the owner, Mario, who said in the summer the place got "crazy" and you couldn't even walk where we were standing at that moment. Visited a nice museum (free on Sunday) and found an internet place. I asked how much it was for an hour and over the rap on the stereo I thought he said 8 euros. I said, "Eight?" and he said, "No, three, but you can pay eight if you want to". I thought, 'Very funny wise guy, and aren't you a little old for Emenem?', but said, "I'll take an hour".
I enjoyed Hania, espically the old port area and would have stayed another day, but had to get to Agios Nikolaos to catch the ferry to Rhodes. The bus was supposed to be direct from Hania, but at Iraklio it stopped and everyone got off. I didn't notice and after a minute or two the driver saw that I hadn't gotten off. He said something and pointed to the bus in front of us. It seems that I was supposed to get off my bus and onto the other. Not my concept of 'direct', but then my concepts don't apply here. It began to pull away and the driver and another guy pounded on the side of it trying to get it to stop-no luck. One guy turned to me, pointed to the bus I had just gotten off of and said, "Half hour". So I waited the half hour and got back on to finish my ride.
