I-80 is the most heavily traveled east-west highway in the country. We picked it up near Omaha and will follow it across most of Nebraska. This route is rich in 19th century history and the mobility of America. Along this route, which essentially followed the Platte River, were the Oregon Trail, the Mormon Trail, the Pony Express and the Union Pacific Railroad. Here is the history of a nation moving west to find gold, homesteads and a dream of bettering themselves.

As you venture across Nebraska you see grain elevators and fields. Small agricultural towns are plentiful. This is wheat country. It is also a tourist Mecca. Today we are camped at Hastings, NE. On the way here we stopped off at Aurora, a small town with a world class museum. AAA rates this as a gem attraction, and it is every bit of that. This museum named The Plainsman Museum is the work and love of the entire town. It is a must not miss attraction with displays that put the Smithsonian Institute in DC to shame.

Down the road from our campsite is another local museum, the Hastings Museum. Like the one at Aurora, this too is a AAA tour book gem attraction. The displays and collections are outstanding.
