Another day, another city. We zipped into Heidelberg for a quick visit to say hello to Matthias and Indra, a couple we met last year in Guatemala. Indra was unable to join us because she was studying for a major exam coming up the next day. Poor Matthias. It was up to him alone to escort us around Heidelberg's drinking establishments. After a warm-up drink at a neighborhood-ish bar, Matthias took us to a small weinstubbe (wine bar). The wine was very good but the real entertainment was the cranky owner. After discussing the different German wines on the menu, Matthias set about to order for us. John wanted a Riesling, but when Matthias tried to order it, the owner asked "Who is it for?" Matthias pointed, the owner glanced briefly at John, then snarled "He von't like it" and suggested a different Riesling. And that was one of his warmer moments. Ask us later about the cheese we tried. After the wine, we went to a tourist-friendly brewpub and sampled a good local ale, then finished the night just across the street at a bar where Matthias used to work. We were introduced to a couple of other Heidelbergers, shared drinks and stories, and were invited to stick around for a while after the bar offially closed at 1. I think I finished the night with some kind of German brandy. I am sure it was good.
