Back At Marana At Sunset

Had To Take More Than One!

Or Even Two

Today we traveled to the Kitt Peak National Observatory. This observatory has the largest collection of optical telescopes in the world.

They give tours daily and also have a nightly star gazing. We didn't have any trouble getting in to the daily tours,

but in order to do the nightly event, you have to book about six weeks in advance so we didn't get to do that.

The tour of the observatory was wonderful and we enjoyed seeing the inside tour of the Mayall 4M Telescope.

Our tour guide was an expert and filled our heads to overflowing with facts about all the types of telescopes, locations of observatories around the world and how each of the various telescopes at Kitt Peak work. Since all of this knowledge overflowed, we can't begin to explain it to you. You'll just have to visit yourselves.

We were lucky enough to be in the Mayall building when they rotated the dome of the observatory. It was quite a sight.

The ride to the observatory and the views from the top of the mountain was a real treat. The views are absolutely spectacular!

When we arrived back at our campsite, there was another beautiful sunset.

We would have loved to see the sunset from Kitt Peak but I don't even want to think about driving down that mountain in the dark!
