Hello from Darjeeling in North East India where it is still quite chilly so we are keeping warm with lots of tea.
We arrived here 5 days ago from Delhi after an amazing two week tour of Rajasthan, which is in the west and borders Pakistan. We travelled with a driver and guide for the entire time, which is not really our style, but we thought it was an easier option and gentler introduction to India for the girls. Rajasthan was fun, but in hindsight we probably did too much travelling and not enough stopping in each place we visited. We stayed in some amazing old traditional hotels called "havelis" and kidded on the Raj was still in full swing. The highlights include a camel ride into the Thar desert, a boat trip on the lake at Udaipur, and of course the Taj Mahal. Our guide Jay, who was a very nice and laid back young man, had a memorable quote "In India anything is possible" and we think that really sums up the range of everything you get here. From ridiculous wealth to extreme poverty, from architectural gems to carbuncles worse than ours. The motorways with cows in the central reserve and trucks coming towards you on your side of the divide, and its just accepted as normal.
We are about to set off on our own for a wee trek in the mountains above Darjeeling. They say there is still a lot of snow about so we may be back here sooner than we think.
We will let you know how it goes.
We have spent today buying up hats gloves and extra woolies in the market just to make sure we don't freeze.
Its just over 3 weeks until we get back and our thoughts are turning to home.
Thanks again for all your great messages.
