Don't be scared of heights...

We spent the morning walking around Kings Canyon and returned to Alice Springs.

To avoid the heat we had another early start at 6:00 am; only to realise again we were the last to leave the campground?! A 6.6 km ring walk leads from the car park up to the canyon and along the rim. The first kilometre is a very steep climb up to the top and offers some nice views on the plain. Once up the walk gets increasingly interesting and easier. Before reaching the actual rim you walk through millions of domes on the plateau that look like geometrically aligned cookie mountains. Also interesting to see are the different layers that make up the mountains. Once reaching the rim you get stunning views over the canyon's rim on which you can walk along for the next few kilometres. When you change from one rim to the other, at the end of the canyon, you pass through the Garden Of Eden; a lost oasis with palms. Once on the other side you get once again spectacular 200m high views over the canyon's vertical walls. What made the walk enjoyable was that the path was not pre-defined while being given enough hints for direction and that plenty of explanations of the mountains, flora and fauna were given.

The drive back to Alice seemed awfully familiar with the only difference being the first ten clouds in days and the company of small sandstorms circulating through the desert.
