Chile - Puerto Natales (PN) - Torres Del Paine
Nov 18, 2004
|We found a place to stay in PN (Casa Cecilia - recommended). There were seven of us planning to do the ´W´, a hike in the nearby national park of Torres del Paine (the towers of Paine). This is about a 75km trekk which can take anywhere from 4 days to 7. We decided to do it in 5 days.
We opted to carry all our own stuff (completely self sufficient) so we rented tents, sleeping bags, mats, gas stoves and bought all our own food (bangers and mash, rice, pasta, noodles...). We set out at 7am the next morning on a bus to the national park (4 hours). The first part of our trip was to get a boat across the lake to our starting point. Before this we took a quick half an hour hike to the local waterfalls 'Salto Grande'.
After the boat had dropped us off at Refugio Pehoe we put on our heavy packs and headed off to glacier Grey. It was a 5 hour walk going up and down and up and down, it was hell ! I don´t think we were quite prepared and we definately had too much weight on our backs ! We arrived at our campsite and pitched our tents. We all decided to have a go at cooking, believe us seven people trying to cook sausages and mashed potatoes on two stoves doesn't work. We decided a rota from then on... However the food still tasted divine after a long day's walk. We then flopped to bed.
The next days saw us walking back to the Refugio Pehoe, across to Campamento Italiano where we dropped our packs and went up the Valley of the Rio del Frances, back down and on to Refugio Los Cuernos, on to Refugio Chileno, up to the Torres del Paine and then all the way back to Hosteria Las Torres to get a bus back to PN.
- Sitting on the beach near to Refugio Los Cuernos soaking up the sun
- A particulary nice egg and ham toasted sandwich (or two !) at Refugio Chileno (food rations were dissapearing fast at this point !).
- View point up at Las Torres (although the 5 o´clock start was a bit of a bummer)
- The company (we had a good group of people and it was always entertaining !)
When we got back to PN we were knackered and we had a well deserved shower (hadn´t really changed our clothes for 5 days !!!) before going for a group feed as we were going our separate ways the next day.
