Nov. 19, free day in Salta and bus trip to Reconquista
Kevin and I spent last free day in Salta doing our own things. I got up early to visit several museums. While I was at the cabildo, the old town hall situated on one side of the main plaza, a demonstration outside caught my attention, and unable to concentrate due to the noise and my curiosity, I ventured out into the bright sun to see what was happening.
From what I could tell, it was a high school class celebrating the end of the term, but there was also something else going on. The students were carrying banners that said something like "Biblioteca Municipal contra SIDA." I know enough from my HIV/AIDS work that SIDA is the Spanish acronym for AIDS. They marched around the plaza a couple of times, ending up in front of a stage.
There was definitely something "official" going on as well, the Argentine and Santa Fe province flags were on the stage, and a small press corp. was gathering. Some official-looking people made some remarks to the press, and then, someone got up on the stage and started speaking.
From what I could understand from the speeches, someone made a proclamation about protecting young people's lives from SIDA. The speeches went on and on and on; eventually I got bored and returned to the museum. While I was reading up on local mummification practices, a band started to play music. Cheers filled the air and I found the stairs up to the second floor balcony overlooking the stage below. It was about noon, and a throng of students, still in their school uniforms, was dancing in the street under a very strong sun. PHOTO
I watched the concert for 10 minutes, left the museum, got lunch, found a park and took an afternoon siesta before returning to the hostel. Kevin arrived around 4:30, and our transfer to the bus station picked us up at five. On the bus to Resistencia we watched the sun set over the Andes.
