Goa has been a complete surprise, the climate is almost perfect, hot sunny days with hardly any humidity, the evenings are cool. We were really fortunate to have picked Panjim as our base in Goa as it was just so beautiful, quiant and full of historic charm. Narrow streets winding round brightly coloured homes and shops, you could stroll amongst the lanes all day discovering hidden-away cafes, restaurants and some wonderful run-down old buildings of Portuguess influence, taty but still full of charm.
Panjim can only be discribe in pictures!
Further north of Goa there are several very touristy areas know as the Costa de Sol of India and was the last place we wanted to be. As usual we wanted to just see for ourselves and have our own judgement on the place and so we grabbed a tuk tuk and headed up to Calangute. It was exactly as we had imagined, a combination of cheap tat shops, pushy taxi drivers, european theme food restaurants, pub style drinking holes blaring out dated and distorted dance tracks.
We visited a huge flea market north of Goa at Anjuna, the colours there was amazing and there was nothing you couldn't buy, from a carved wooden elephant to shoes to a Ferrari print bath towel to the latest Goan dance CD's...
We found a restaurant on the beach serving seafood curry away from the crowd with a small live band in their late 50's playing cylipso music but the poor guys didn't stand a chance with the restaurant/bar either side of us blaring out their modern tracks, much louder and fighting for attention. We ended up in a Tibetian restaurant for a drink and made friends with the Nepalese waiter who was working and travelling around India and hope to end up in Singapore some day, and meanwhile he gave us some sound advice for trekking in Nepal.
We also discovered a restaurant full of character, with perfectly cosy balconies (that Sam couldn't fit in so had to move!) serving seafood platters. It consisted of grilled fish, bombay duck (salted dried fish)crab, king prawns, muscles, squid and shrimps in lots of species and chilli. It was most tasty but felt it was a bit too much sauce and overcooked you could hardly taste the sea food itself...god! we're fussy!
