Fishing for breakfast

After our days in the mountains of Kerala we descended back to sea level and the backwaters of Kumarakom for a night on a houseboat. We had been told this would be a very special experience, but we had no idea just how amazing it would be.

With the houseboat we also had the services of its captain, Somi, the first mate, Paul, and the chef, Krisnu. The scenery was too beautiful to describe and the food too tasty to convey. We cruised until sunset past villages built on the tiny fingers of land which managed to survive above the ever-changing water levels.

After a peaceful night's sleep rocking gently on board, I woke up early to walk the shores in search of locals. There were women washing clothes, children bathing and playing in the water, and men fishing for breakfast or walking to work along the edge of the water, briefcase in hand. The way of life looked as beautiful as the people themselves. I took some pictures of people and showed them their images on the screen on the back our digital camera - this never fails to cause big smiles.

Our time on the houseboat felt far too short.
