We camped on the beach at Haast..... in amoungst the sand dunes. Sat around a camp fire with another couple burning drift wood collected from the beach.

Travelled though the Haast Pass , seeing wonderful waterfalls, before a stop over at a DOC site in the middle of nowhere....... just magic getting up in the morning to see ( yes we could actually see) the mountains and some blue sky.

On from Haast to Queenstown we stayed at Shotover between Q'Town and Arrowtown, an old gold mining prospectors township...... very interesting. Also visited the garden of Janet Blair which was special as it was advertised in the UK RHS magazine and we were only the second people to visit her.

From here we travelled north to Glenorchy and then onto the beginning of the ROUTEBURN TRACK some 65miles northeast of Queenstown. Routeburn is one of NZ top 10 walking tracks of some 33km. We did just the first 2 stages as far as Routeburn Falls - as a day trip of some 11 miles return. Very hard wok for us both, it took us about 6hrs walking to cover the return trip. NOt bad I suppose as the route was quite up and down raising from the start some 1500ft but with the ups and downs it felt like twice that. Scenery was spectacular all the way, with many supension bridges to cross....great experiance even if we were both knackered at the end of the day.

Drove back to Q'Town for the night before travelling on to Doubtful Sound some 2.5 hrs away .......... see next update.

Apologies now for lack of detail on map updates but it seems it will only take one location move per session and so its struggling to keep up with all our movements and onwards travells!!!!!!
