Jade's Big Trip 2006 travel blog

About to head off

The mighty Zambezi

Victoria Falls

The spray is so thick in parts you can hardly see

Just a quickie to say i have had THE most awesome day!!

I went whitewater rafting this morning and out of all the countries I have done it in this is the best by far!

Grade 5 rapids (those are the REALLY big ones for those who don't know) along 15km of the Zambezi river. Not only that but throw in an added alement of danger with crocodiles and hippos in the river as well and you have an amazing rafting trip! We tipped only once but it was a big one and I was stuck underwater in a whirlpool so long I was starting to wonder if I was ever going to pop back out. And then when I did, I was under the upturned raft and in my efforts to get out from under it someone else landed on my head. We were still in the middle of the rapid and so all 7 of us were all tossed about for some distance before we could right the raft and climb aboard.

The only downer was that it was raining and I was absolutely freezing (I know, I know, how can that be in Africa of all places but its true! And I wasn't the only cold one)

AND, my fabulous Olympus underwater and shockproof camera withstood the ultimate test i think after the ordeal I put it through.

Unfortunately I didn't get to do the gorge swing due to bad weather :(

But we won't talk about that!

In other news, I met my tour and its not great news. Firstly, 26 of them have been travelling together already for the last 5 weeks and there are only 4 new people, including me(another couple and Todd, the guy I had been to Hwange with). Its like we are the intruders or something! Secondly, they are all couples except for 4 of them. Thirdly, all the tents were taken with only two left so the new couple got one and I have to share a tent with a Todd for 3 weeks!!! What is the story with that?? We also had to share a lodge at Hwange but thought that was bearable for just a couple of nights seeing as we had no choice and there was no where else to go, but this is taking it to the extreme! How can they not have enough tents to go around??

I suppose at least I already know he doesn't snore :)

I'm heading off in the morning for Botswana, apparantly the currency is more user friendly there so hopefully I won't get ripped off again! No mobile reception while I am there but will be contactable again in a week. They still have internet though so they aren't completely out of the loop!!

Also, I'm having dramas accessing my Yahoo email account so while I love getting those emails from you all, can you please sent emails through this site instead? Just hit the leave a message button on the top right corner on the main page. If you don't want me to post it to the guestbook just say so in your message :)
